Learn more: http://pulitzercenter.org/projects/africa/pipeline-dreams-journey-along-chad-cameroon-oil-pipeline By Christiane Badgley, for the Pulitzer Center. The World Bank-supported Chad-Cameroon oil pipeline has been operational for over six years, but the controversy surrounding the so-called oil for development project has hardly died down. The 1070 km (670 mile) pipeline transports oil from the Doba fields of southwestern Chad to a marine loading terminal off the Atlantic coast near Kribi, Cameroon. From one end of the pipeline to the other, project partners raised the hopes and expectations of local populations. But today, for those who had no real choice or say about the project, the disappointment is profound. This report is part of Pulitzer Center-sponsored project "Pipe(l...

The Story of Mobil Oil in Chad is just one such example.

Samuel Nguiffo struggled tirelessly to stop the liquidation of the world's second largest contiguous rainforest for short-term profit. As a lawyer and founder of the Center for Environment and Development, Nguiffo worked to inform forest-dwelling peoples, including Pygmies, of their legal right to manage their traditional lands. He was also at the forefront of an international effort to ensure that the Chad/Cameroon oil pipeline project did not bring about large-scale forest destruction, marine pollution and social dislocation. While some places are on this list due to armed conflicts and violence, other places are on the list thanks to physical or biological calamities. Regardless of the reasons, the one thing all of these places have in common is that most western governments do not advise travel to them unless it is absolutely necessary. These are the 25 most dangerous places to visit as a tourist. Also, before we continue, just remember, being on this list doesn't necessarily mean the entire country is bad to visit (although it can). Just make sure to check on regional travel warnings. The Gerewol is an annual courtship ritual competition among the Woodabe Japto people of Western Chad. Young men dressed in elaborate ornamentation and made up in traditional face painting gather in lines to dance and sing, vying for the attentions of marriageable young women. The Gerewol occurs each year as the traditionally nomadic Woodabe cattle herders gather at the southern edge of the Sahara in Chad before dispersing south on their dry season pastures. There is normally a large festival and market as well as a series of clan meetings that take place for the Woodabe. The actual dance event is called the Yaake, while other less famous elements—bartering over dowry, competitions or horse races among suitors—make up the week-long Gerewol.
http://www.amydaneadventures.com/ Only some 400 tourists visit Chad each year. If you want to step out of your life and disappear into a vast, stunning and varied landscape; if youd have a keen sense of adventure; don't mind 130 degree heat midday or winds blowing dust through your tent at night, then Chad is the place to go. This huge landlocked country covers 495,753 square miles. If the human population is approximately ten million, the cattle and camel population seems triple that number. Part one of thios clip features our vans traveling through the landscape, touching the Sahel, savannah, desert and Ennedi region. Part two highlights the pulse of Chad - its people, wildlife, rivers and markets. Timeless, colorful and dare I say quirky, I have never experienced anything like thi...

On our trip to Italy last year, we had a great tour guide. Her name was Deborah Guichard. We called her Debbie :) She was extremely knowledgeable about everything in Italy. We were able to have her help us around Rome and we had a great time there! We just found out that she got sick and recently passed away. We want to pay tribute to Debbie, by sharing this video that we happened to record of her sharing her gratitude about people in her life.
From Wealthy Women to Women who "Fall Down": Corporate Detachment, “Gender-Neutral” Policy, and Women’s Access to Land in the Oilfields of Chad - AWARE Seminar The consortium of global oil companies that built the Chad-Cameroon pipeline designed policies for taking land that were described as models for the extractive industries by the World Bank and were supposed to be gender neutral. I trace the effects of these policies in the oilfields of Chad through the disappearance of the baou déné, who were successful female farmers, and the rise of the baou mosso, women who make a precarious living off the farm through small trade and who regularly "fall down" (mosso) or go broke. I suggest that large, private companies that seek to limit their liabilities and minimize their ongoing obligations ...

It will highlight the fact that the business and human rights agenda in the Human Rights Council remains unfinished, especially in the critical areas of access to justice and accountability, as well as the need for bold Council action to provide States and other actors with the necessary tools to ensure remedy and justice to victims of serious human rights abuses committed by or with the complicity of corporations in home and host countries.
